4. JOSEPH2 HARDEE (Thomas1) was born between 1760 and 1770 in Dobbs County, North Carolina; Will of Sarah Croom Hardee, Copy found in the F. Lee Edwards and Re-recorded Documents of Lenoir County, NC. He married Sarah (Hardee) BY 1795. He married Nancy Kennedy, daughter of John Kennedy and Mary Rasberry, in Lenoir County, North Carolina, in 1826; Collection of Frederick Lee Edwards, dec. He died between 1830 and 1840 in Lenoir County, North Carolina. Joseph Hardee and his wife, Sarah Bright, settled on a corner of the old plantation. His son, Bright Hardee, built a home within a stone's throw of the old settlement, that is today known in Kinston as the "Parrott - Hardee Home Place. It stands now near the lands of the Caswell Taining School, while the homesite of his mother, Sarah Croom, is a part of the Training School lands. The unmarked headstone of their graves still stands in the family cemetery beside the grave of their youngest son, Bright Hardee. The cemetery lies on a knoll almost directly cross the road and in front of the house. Joseph Hardee and his wife were thrifty and acculated considerable holdings in land. He took over from his mother a little iron box, which contained a copy of his mother's will. This box comes down to Mrs. J. H. Alexander in Kinston, NC and contains deeds that show that he bought out the shares of his mother's estate with the exception of the home place that appears to have gone into the possession of his brother, Major Hadee. It was from these deeds that the names of the husbands of the unmarried daughters of Sarah Croom Hardee as mentioned in her will were obtained. From Col. David Hardee FROM THE F. Her maiden name is not proven and I rather doubt she was a Bright. Her first name is proven on the tombstone of their son Bright. The five known children of Joseph2 Hardee and Sarah (Hardee) were as follows:
Hardee gives Pinckney Hardee as a son, but Pinckney was born in 1802 and according to the census would not have been a son. In the Hardee Book is a note from the Bible records of Martha Hardee, daughter of Isaac Hardee who was the son of Joseph P. Hardee. Martha was born in 1821 and died in 1890. She married John Brown and they had at least one daughter Mary Penelope Brown born in 1854 and died in Kinston in 1927, unmarried. The Bible was in the possesion of Mary Penelope Brown and efforts are underway to try and locate the Bible. There are three Isaac Hardees on the 1830 Census, and the one next to Joseph Hardee was the only one with children. Two were daughters 5-10, consistent with Martha's age. If Martha was the oldest child, this would be circumstantial evidence that Isaac Hardee who married Eleanor Taylor, daughter of Isaac Taylor, were her parents. According to Marriage Records in the James W. Cox Collection, the date of their marriage was 21 February 1820. It is also said that John L. Hardee, born in 1828 who lived in LaGrange was a son of Isaac. Again the Census is consistent with John L. being Isaac's son. There were no Isaac Hardees on the 1840 or 1850 Lenoir Census, and none on the 1850 Pitt Census of the right age. The 1840 Pitt Census is being prepared for PCFR.
NANCY KENNEDY was born circa 1770 in Dobbs County, North Carolina. She married Major Hardee, son of Thomas Hardee and Sarah Croom, in Lenoir County, North Carolina, in December 1789; Ibid. BOOK 25 - Lenoir Co Cross Indicies Canaday, Mary to John Canaday 414 Canaday, Mary to Olive Canaday 416 BOOK 26 Kennedy, Olive to John Kennedy 143 * Kennedy, Rachel to Same 143 Kennedy, John & Mary to Jacob Parrott 163 Kennedy, Mary to Thomas H. Kennedy 179 Kennedy, Solomon to Matthew H. Carr 179 * This is about the time they are moving to Ala. Rachel appears to be an unknown daughter. John and Mary appears to be mother and son. Mary's mother's Will proves she was married to a Kennedy but not which one. Bev German - bgerman@mail.southwind.net - has done extensive research on this family and all the entries are from her database. I believe Mary was a Hardee and Walter her husband for these reasons: Sarah Croom Kennedy names daughter Mary Kennedy in her will. Mary named a son Thomas Hardy Kennedy. Thomas Hardy names a daughter Mary Francis. He names a son John. John names a son William Hardy. Thomas Hardy Kennedy mar Sarah Shaw of Iredell Co NC. Her mother and father name a son Jesse H. Croom Shaw. When Thomas Hardy Kennedy and wife Sarah died, guardianship passed to Sarah's brother A. T. Shaw, Jr. It is almost a certainty that A. T. Shaw, Jr. mar Moses F. Westbrook's younger sister Percis Westbrook, the Westbrooks being former residents of Lenoir Co. NC. Mary Kennedy made an Indenture asking, at her death, for son John to take care of her son Hardy and family, who had fallen on hard times. She had property and slaves. WALTER KENNEDY was born in Dobbs County, North Carolina, circa 1760. Walter died circa 1810 in Lenoir County, North Carolina. The seven known children of Mary2 Hardee and Walter Kennedy were as follows:
1843 in Marengo County, Alabama. She died on 30 May 1862 in Lauderdale County, Mississippi.
1820 and the unknown daughter was married to the Roddy in 1810, it is assumed this is not Rachel. 7. WILLIAM2 HARDEE (Thomas1) was born in 1780 in Dobbs County, North Carolina; Ibid. He died between 1850 and 1860 in Lenoir County, North Carolina; 1850 Lenoir Co, NC Census. There is only one William on the 1800 census - unmarried. After that there are two the same age and with almost the same number and ages of children. It is not possible to sort them. I do think that Thomas on the later census living next door to a William was the son of William who was the son of Sarah and Thomas. The Census is consistent with three sons and is also consistent with the family tradition that Major left home about the age of 13. William was living with Pinkney on the 1850 Census which is the only circumstantial we have on William being his father. 8. ELIZABETH2 HARDEE (Thomas1) was born in Dobbs County, North Carolina, circa 1781; Collection of Dr. Francis R. Hodges, 1999 Lakeland, Florida.; Will of Sarah Croom Hardee, Copy found in the F. Lee Edwards and Re-recorded Documents of Lenoir County, NC.; Tombstone, Lenoir County, NC. She married Jesse Croom Kennedy, son of John Kennedy and Mary Rasberry. Elizabeth died on 1 September 1858 in Lenoir County, North Carolina; Ibid. She was buried in Jesse Kennedy Cemetery,, Lenoir County, North Carolina. I have not seen anything to prove this marrige but it is generally accepted to be the case. A good portion of this information came from Francis Hodges. JESSE CROOM KENNEDY was born on 1 January 1781; Ibid.; John Kennedy Family Bible, Copy on the Lenoir County GenWeb Archives site, posted by Dr. Francis R. Hodges.; The American Advocate, abstracted in the NCGJ, February 87 by Katherine K. Walls, Kinston, NC. Jesse died on 25 May 1856 in Lenoir County, North Carolina, at age 75; Ibid. He was buried in Jesse Kennedy Cemetery,, Lenoir County, North Carolina. The Bible is in poor shape and some of the entires are not readable. Will of Jesse Kennedy-1856-Lenoir Co mentions daughter-Harriett Parrott, daughter-Sarah Parrott. Attached notes say Harriet is wife of Benjamin Parrott (a Disciple Minister) and Sarah married Oliver Parrott. Infomation was taken from notes of Mrs. J. F. Parrott made in 1916 and that Mrs. Parrott was still alive in 1962. Jesse Kennedy born 1781 There is no proof that Elizabeth was the daughter of Thomas and Sarah Croom Hardee other than family tradition. The Industrial Issue of the Free Press gives his middle name as Croom and state Jesse's wife was Elizabeth Hardee. The seven known children of Elizabeth2 Hardee and Jesse Croom Kennedy all born in Lenoir County, North Carolina, were as follows:

9. SUSANNAH2 HARDEE (Thomas1) was born circa 1783 in Dobbs County, North Carolina; Will of Sarah Croom Hardee, Copy found in the F. Lee Edwards and Re-recorded Documents of Lenoir County, NC. She married Jesse Hare Croom, son of Richard Croom and Ann (Nancy) Hare, on 25 February 1810 in Wayne County, North Carolina; Re-Registered Deeds of Dobbs and Lenoir Counties, found at the NC Archives, Raleigh, NC.; Lois Neal Smathers., Marriages and Death Notices from Raleigh, NC Newspapers 1796 - 1826. She died after 1820 in Alabama. Jesse H. CROOM married a Susan (Star) or a Polly (Raleigh Register) HARDEE or HARDY on 25 Feb 1810. Jesse Hare CROOM moved his family to Alabama about 1818 where he is listed on the tax rolls. I am rather comfortable with the belief that the Jesse H. CROOM who married Susannah, daughter of Sarah, was JESSE HARE CROOM, son of Richard and Ann "Nancy" Hare CROOM. This Jesse moved to Greene County, AL just before 1819 and died there 1 Apr 1849. Above information from John Croom. I can't prove that Susannah was the mother of the oldest five children of Jesse, but am going to assume she was. She appears to still be alive in 1820. Family tradition that someone sent to Bev stated that her ancestor was Major Hardee who was born in Dobbs Cunty, left home at the age of 12 after a fight with his brother in the barn, was captured by the Indians, went to Covington County, Ala and then onto Sabine Co., La. It also appears he made a stop in Georgia unless there was another Major Hardee. Susanna died before March 1844; Ibid. (an unknown value). HENRY HILL. The first time I heard anything about Henry Hill being married first to Betsy Rouse was in the late '70's when Fannie Lee Hill Prescott published her "My Hill and Allied Lines." She had called and asked my mother some questions about our immediate family just before she had it printed. I just happened to see a copy of her book and became interested in what she had researched. She never told me specifically how she knew about Betsy, but there was something mentioned in the book about some Bible records that had been found. (I'll have to check her book to find out exactly what was said about those Bible records.) Fannie also got information from Ima. I've seen Betsy Rouse referred to as Elizabeth Rouse in Ima's papers, but have seen no reference about proof. I talked to Ima a couple of times, but not about this particular thing. So, I don't know whether Ima or Fannie (or someone else) first worked out that Elizabeth/Betsy Rouse was the first wife of my Henry Hill. I, too, have wondered if somehow the name is wrong. Could it be that Susannah C. Rouse Hill was known by the nickname Betsy and someone assumed that meant Elizabeth? That hardly seems likely, I guess. When I was at Heritage Place at LCC recently, I made brief notes from the 1830 Greene Census regarding Henry Hill. Found exactly what Christine has. Then in the 1840 Greene Census regarding Henry Hill, I noted: 1 male 5-, 1 male 5-10, 1 male 50-60, and 1 female 5- Assuming this might be the Henry who married Susannah C. Rouse, that's three children instead of the four and the wife is not in the household. Hypothesis: Susannah has recently died and some other female in the family in another household has taken Jonathan, the baby (who is listed as 10 years old in the Wiley Rouse household in 1850 Lenoir), to care for. Becky Becky Above from Becky Hill - mrhill@eastlink.net. The four known children of Susanna C.3 Rouse and Henry Hill were as follows:

PHINETTA3 ROUSE (Catherine2Hardee, Thomas1) was born in Lenoir County, North Carolina, on 4 February 1812; Alexander Hill Family Bible, Mrs. E. C. Averette, copy in my possession without the front page, Winterville, Pitt County, North Carolina.; Jonathan Rouse Family Bible. She married Alexander Hill, son of Richard Hill and Mary Rouse, in Lenoir County, North Carolina, on 9 February 1832; Alexander Hill Family Bible.; Estate of Jonathan Rouse. Phinetta died on 20 August 1848 in Lenoir County, North Carolina, at age 36. Family tradition states she died when her youngest son, Thomas, was born; Tombstone. Her body was interred in Lenoir County, North Carolina, in Alexander Hill Cemetery. ALEXANDER HILL was born in Lenoir County, North Carolina, on 8 May 1809; Alexander Hill Family Bible. He married Martha Hill, daughter of Richard Hill Sr. and Esther Aldridge, on 19 November 1848; Ibid. Alexander died on 13 November 1861 in Lenoir County, North Carolina, at age 52; Tombstone. His body was interred in Lenoir County, North Carolina, in Alexander Hill Cemetery. Alexander Hill lived near Little Sister's Meeting House on the Hugo Road. My father, Ronald Mewborn, told me his Grandmother, Granny Hill (who was really his great grandmother), used to tell him how she walked to school across a log that crosses Loosing Swamp. The log is where the bridge is now across Wallace Road and where the short road from the Hugo Road deadends into Wallace Road. The Nunn family appears to have lived on the same short road. ALEXANDER HILL BIBLE Original Bible in the possession of Mrs. E. C. Averette or her son E. C. Averette, Jr. of Winterville, NC, copy in my possession. I do not have a copy of the front page. Alexander Hill was the son of Richard and Mary Rouse Hill. Richard and his brother, Levi, moved to Lenoir County from Craven County. Mary Rouse was the daughter of Simon Rouse. Finette was the daughter of Jonathan and Catherine Hardee Rouse. Her name is spelled Phinettey in her parent's Bible. Alexander's 2nd wife, Martha Hill, was part of the Greene County Robert Hill family. The last entry refers to Alexander, the son of Alexander and Finette. The Bible clearly states he married Mary Ann Spivey; however, the wife of Richard C. Hill, Martha Nunn, said Mary Ann was her sister so Mary Ann could have been a widow. She married James Stuart in Craven County, North Carolina, circa 1871; Unknown repository. Catherine died circa 1871 in Craven County, North Carolina. Catherine was left off part of the estate records - original needs to be rechecked. Family tradition, as told by Kathleen Griffin Wilson and Marietta Griffin Franklin, provides us with vivid imagery of Catharine. She is said to have been endowed with great physical strength, having lifted hogsheads when needed. She was undoubtedly strong willed and determined, having been widowed at age 40 during the Civil War with 9 children. Kathleen Wilson relates that she maintained good discipline and managed well. She continued to farm with the help of her family and friends. We know from court and census records that she was literate. Catharine, according to family tradition, always kept the house open to Confederate soldiers. Two such soldiers, Levin B. Price and J. Everette Dail, were from the Seven Springs area of southeastern Wayne County, NC. These two soldiers married two of Catharine's daughters, Susan and Sarah. Information from A. Ray Griffin. CRAVEN BRYAN GRIFFIN was born in Craven County, North Carolina, circa 1813. Craven Bryan Griffin lived in the Dover section of western Craven County, NC. Mary Etta Griffin Franklin remembers her parents saying that he lived on "Peter's Ridge," located just north of Dover in the vicinity of Moseley Creek. Peters Ridge had been in the Griffin family for many years. He apparently went by the name Bryan(t) and Croom. The name Bryan is used repeatedly in his estate records and the 1860 census lists him as "Croom" Griffin. He is shown as a farmer with real estate valued at $2,000 and personal property valued at $1,800. Family tradition states that Craven died of pneumonia. A detailed accounting of the descendants of Craven Bryan Griffin and Catharine J. Rouse may be found in the following book: A. The Joseph Parrott Hardee Home Place This old home stood on a hill near Kinston's Country Club, until it was burned on Sunday, February 10, 1963. It was built prior to the Civil War, was of a handsome Colonial type, and on a ridge that overlooked a large fertile area on which was located the home of Joseph and Sarah Croom Hardee. It stood on lands that were part of the original land grants from the King of England in 1711 to ancestors of the Hardee family. Joseph Parrott Hardee built the house in the late 1850's. Before that time there was a smaller story and a half house at the foot of the hill in which Bright Hardee lived. The property on the original land grant extended from the banks of the Neuse River on the south to Hull Road on the north, and touched the Richard Caswell property on the west. Lemuel Bright Hardee (1837-1864) The following is taken from a clipping out of the Lenoir County News, Kinston, North Carolina, on March 8, 1951. A beautiful old home between Hugo and Kinston looks down from a hilltop on which it is located and presents one of the most pleasing fronts of any home in Lenoir County. It was built by Calvin Tucker at least 110 years ago and was bought from him by Lemuel Bright Hardee, September 18, 1860. It was here that his two daughters were born; one, Amelia Hardee Pridgen, in 1861. She was the mother of Mrs. J. Garves Poole of Kinston, and Mrs. Henry Wheless Cutchin of Rocky Mount, North Carolina. Lemuel Bright Hardee was a grandson of Simon Bright, one of the founders of Kinston, and the son of Bright Hardee and Lydia Mewborn. James A. Pridgen married Amelia Hardee in 1890, and on January 1, 1893, Pridgen bought the place from his mother-in-law because of the sentimental reasons; it was the birthplace of his wife, and also Calvin Tucker, who built it, was his grandfather. It remained in the family for five generations and is in a fine state of preservation. The Eastern North Carolina Hardy-Hardee Family in the South and Southwest by David L. Hardee. OBIT - RICHARD WALTERS SUTTON In memory of my beloved foster father and uncle, Richard Walters Sutton, I will endeaver to write a few lines concerning his life. Uncle "Dick", as he was better known, was born January 8, 1858, and passed away November 13, 1939, making his stay here on earth, 81 years, 10 months, and 5 days. He was married to Miss Martha Ellen Hardy on March 8, 1881, and to this union were born twelve children. He leaves a widow and nine children: Henry Sutton, Hugh Sutton, Woodard Sutton, Mrs. A. H. Cobb, Mrs. G. C. Worthington, Mrs. J. A. Taylor, Mrs. J. R. Whitley, Miss Lois Sutton, and Mrs. J. C. Lewis. They also rearer one other child, Maria Smith, who married Mr. John Beaman, besides myself. He also had several grandchildren and great grandchildren. In April, 1890, he united with the primitive Baptist Church at Bear Creek, LaGrange, NC. In later years, June 20, 1937, he moved his membership, with the church in Kinston, NC. He always kept an orderly, quiet, and peaceful home; always gladly, and cheerfully, entertaining his friends and loved ones. Especially was he glad to have the privilege of entertaining his brethern and sisters in the church and did all he could for their comfort, while they were in his home. He lived a Godly and Christian life of which we would all do well to try and imitate. He was a faithful member as long as his health would permit him to attend. He served as a deacon for a long period of years. He enjoyed right good health until the last year when he began failing fast. He was confined to his bed only ten days. He bore his illness with the most patience I ever saw, I know, never complaining. He just kept sinking, day by day, until the end came on Sunday morning, November 13. The funeral was held at the home of his daughter, Mrs. G. C. Worthington, Kinston, NC, November 14, the service was conducted by his pastor, Elder J. E. Mewborn of Snow Hill, NC and Elder G. W. Boswell, Wilson, NC after which his body was laid to rest in Fairview Cemetery, LaGrange, NC beneath a mound of flowers, showing the esteem that his brethern and friends had for him, there to await the resurrection of the dead body in the grave. To the bereaved family we extend our most sincere, deepest, and heartfelt sympathy. Whereas the death of Brother Sutton, Kinston Church, has lost one of the its oldest and most loyal members. Therefore it is resolved; First: That the Kinston Church has lost a faithful and beloved member who has been called to the Heavenly Mansions above to await the resurrention morning. Second: That the family has lost a kind and loving husband and father. Third: That a copy of these resolutions be written in our church book for future records and a copy sent to the family and a copy sent to the Zion's Landmark for publication. Done by order of the church, while in conference on the third Sunday, November 19, 1939. Mr. Hill returned Thursday week from attending Federal court at Newbern. He was then complaining of not feeling well, but his condition was not regarded as at all serious. He went home and took the bed, but got up Saturday and was walking about Saturday and Sunday. Sunday night he was taken worse and from then on gradually sank into unconsciousness Tuesday night. He never regained consciousness and his death Thursday morning was easy. Mr. Hill was appointed deputy collector under Cleveland's last administration and served about four and a half years in that office, which he held at the time of his death. He was a sterling Democrat, a clever gentleman and had a host of friends. His capablity as an officer is well shown by the fact he stood at the head of the ==== as an effecient deputy collector. HIll - Kinston Daily Free Press Ronald Earl Mewborn, Jr. remembers his great grandmother very well as do many older members of the family living in 1990. "Sam" Mewborn was in his late teens when "Granny" as she was called died and they were very close. Apparently she loved children and shared her life's experiences with them inlcuding stories of her childhood and parents. From what I have been able to gather from a numbers of older relatives in their 90's she lived with her daughter Ada Phillips Tunstall on the corner of what is today Vernon and Queen Streets in Kinston. She outlived her daughter Ada. She was a very petite woman and her husband was quite large. She was very "sweet" and "cuddly". She told Sam of going to school and having to cross a fallen log that was over the Briary. This was located on Wallace Road on the way to Savannah School from the Greenville Hwy around a curve and where the bridge is now. She also told Sam that her maiden name was Nunn, but over the years Sam forgot who her parents were. She said she had a sister Mary who married her brother-in-law Alexander Hill; however, that branch of the family says this is not true or at least they have no evidence of this marriage. The two known children of Richard Croom4 Hill and Martha Ann Nunn both born in Lenoir County, North Carolina, were as follows:

The 1870 Census shows Susan married to D. E. Dial, 32 M W, Farmer with personal property valued at $60, illiterate. She is 27, F W, keeping house and literate. they have one child, Easther C. age 2, F W. The 1880 Census does not show Susan living with Everette Dail, so we assume that she is deceased. He is W M 37, married during Census Year, Farmer. Mary S. wife, W F 28; one child, Nathan, W M 10. We would assume the absence of Easther's name would indicate that she was deceased by 1880.
