Generation No. 1

1. KATHERINE3 JACKSON (JESSE2, JOHN1) was born May 10, 1810 in Craven Co., NC1, and died March 06, 1835 in Fort Barnwell, NC1. She married KINNIAN TERRANCE WEST Abt. 1825 in Craven Co., NC, son of LEVI WEST and WEALTHY BRUTON. He was born September 06, 1797 in Fort Barnwell, NC2,3,4,5, and died November 27, 1865 in Fort Barnwell, NC.

Notes for KINNIAN TERRANCE WEST:
In an application to the Daughters of the American Revolution by a daughter of Speight Brock West and Sarah Ann Becton, I find the following:
"Book D, page 395 December Term 1865. Will of Kinian T. West of Craven County. Younger children: Terrence L. West, Wealthy C. Sutton, Elizabeth A. West, India P. West, James L. West, Franklin N. West, Sophia A. West, Edward H. West, Robert L. West. Older children: Margaret Ann Stevenson, Speight Brock West, William H. West, Bryan C. West (by marriage to Katie JACKSON) Exec: Terrence L. West, William H. West. Witness: G. W. White, Clerk of the Court, John W. Collins."
A family document provides more information about Kinnian and his family, "from Aunt Sallie - Sarah West Lindsay", who was a daughter of Speight Brock West and a granddaughter of Kinnian:
"Kinnian Terrence West married two times. 1st wife, Katie JACKSON was born May 10, 1810, died March 6, 1835. Kinnian Terrence West was born Sept 6, 1797, died Nov 22, 1865. they had William Henry, born August 23, 1828; Margaret Ann, born Aug. 9, 1830; Bryan Clinton, born Sept. 15, 1832; Speight Brock, born Nov. 15, 1834."
"Kinnian T. West and 2nd. wife Teresa Watson (who was born Mar. 18, 1818), had Priscilla Adeline, born June 29, 1839; Terrence Lafayette, born Jan 26, 1841; Wealthy Catherine, born Dec. 19, 1842; Elizabeth Adeline born Feb. 4, 1845; Indiana Priscilla born Feb. 15, 1847; James Lewis born March 8 1850; Frank Napoleon born Dec. 1, 1852; Sophia Alice born Dec. 27, 1854; Edward Ross born April 8, 1860; Robert Lee born June 8, 1863."
In the Federal Census, Kinnian first appears in 1830 as "Kenyon", three households away from his father Levi. In this Census, Kinnian has one free white male of thirty and under forty (himself - 33), one free white female of twenty and under thirty (wife Katherine - 20), and one free white female of fifteen and under twenty (unknown). Where is William Henry? Perhaps the Census taker simply missed his mark, and it is interesting to note that the "total persons" column, including the five slaves listed, has "9" entered, with a fainter "8" later written before it. Perhaps number nine was William?
In 1840, Kinnian appears as "Kinnion". In free white males, there is one 40-49 (himself - 43), one 10-17 (William Henry - 12), and two 5-9 (Bryan Clinton - 8, and Speight Brock - 6). In free white females, there is one 20-29 (2nd wife Teresa - 22), one 5-9 (Margaret Ann - 9 going on 10), and one under 5 (Priscilla Adeline - 1). Kinnian is a slaveholder with males: two 0-9, one 10-23, one 24-35, one 36-54; and females: two 0-9, three 10-23, and one 36-54. Seven are listed as engaged in agriculture.
The 1850 Federal Census, Craven County, NC, page 373, lists Kinian West, 53 years old, Farmer, as the head of a large household: His wife, Teresa (32 years), Alexander (24 years), William (22 years), Eliza (21 years), Bryan (18 years), Spaight (16 years), Terence (9 years), Catherine (7 years), Elizabeth (6 years), Indiania (3 years), and Nancy (14 years). My research points to Alexander as Kinnian's half-brother, Eliza as Alexander's wife (Elizabeth Daughety), and Nancy as William Henry's wife (Nancy Moye).
By 1860, several children have married and established their own homes. "Kenion T. West" (63 years, farmer with 12000 value of real estate) is listed with his wife Teresa (41, housekeeper), son "Terence" (19, farmer), daughter Wealthy C. (17, seamstress), Elizabeth (15, seamstress), Indiana P. (13), James L. (10), Franklin N. (8), Sophia (3), and Edward R. (2/12).
Kinnian passed away November 27, 1865, and by 1870, the young children had been distributed among the households of several of the older children: William Henry had taken in "Jas. L", "Edward R", and "Robbert". Speight Brock had taken in Franklin N. The household of William Sutton, by then married to Wealthy Catherine West, included India P., married to Benjamin Sutton, and Sophia, who is interestingly listed as a Sutton rather than a West. Some researchers indicate that Elizabeth A. married Benjamin Sutton in November 1866, and this is corroborated by her headstone in the Kinnian West Family Cemetery off highway 55 near Dover, NC ("wife of Benj. Sutton"). Elizabeth died July 12, 1867, and apparently her widowed husband married her sister India.

SETH WEST

SETH WEST, the subject of this sketch, is the oldest child of the late W. H. WEST and NANCY MOYE WEST. He was born March 24, 1851, in Lenoir County, ten miles south of Kinston. His early education was received in the district schools and in this city.
The first twenty-two years of his married life were spent on a farm in Sand Hill Township, this county. During this time, he also engaged in the mercantile and lumber business.
He removed to Dover, N. C. in December 1897. Since then, he has been actively engaged in the lumber business, being now president of the Dover Lumber Company, which is represented on another page. Mr. West is one of the largest real estate owners in the counties of Lenoir and Craven and is very prominent in the business affairs of Dover.
On June 11, 1874, he was happily married to Miss LAURA ANNA WEST, daughter of JACOB AND JULIA WEST. To this union were born fifteen children, ten of whom are living, one being Mrs. F. E. DIXON, and the wife of F. E. DIXON, one of our photographers.
...
In 1896, Mr. TYNDALL entered business for himself, and since that time has been engaged in merchandising, farming, logging, and saw milling. In 1901, he was elected mayor of Dover.
At that time W. A. WILSON was clerk and treasurer, and G. V. RICHARDSON, J. E. WARTERS, SETH WEST, and T. L. WEST, were on the board of aldermen.
...
THE DOVER LUMBER CO.

The Dover Lumber Company was incorporated in January 1906. The incorporators and officers are SETH WEST, president; J. H. WEST, Vice-President; D. W. RICHARDSON, secretary; and N. S. RICHARDSON, treasurer. The amount of capital stock authorized was $20,000, of which $6,000 was paid in. The company makes a specialty of North Carolina kiln dried pine gum and hardwood for fish boxes and cabbage crates. It is located in Dover and is a valuable addition to that growing town. It is a successor to the West and Parrott milling business, which was situated beyond the limits of the town. Now it bids fair to develop rapidly into a large lumber concern.

Moreover, George does not appear in the 1860 Federal Census.

Notes for GEORGE V. RICHARDSON:
Industrial Issue of Kinston Free Press, 1906:
GEORGE V. RICHARDSON
One of the leading merchants of Dover is GEORGE V. RICHARDSON, born on February 9, 1869, three miles from Dover, in Craven County. At the age of thirteen, he entered Davis Military School at LaGrange, remaining there three years. He graduated in military tactics, and returned to his father's farm, intending later on to enter Trinity College. Circumstances prevented his taking this step, and for three years, he taught in the public schools of his native county.
In 1889, Mr. Richardson married Miss BLANCHE WEST, daughter of W. H. WEST, of Lenoir County. Soon after this, he went to Dover and entered the mercantile business where he has grown up with the town. He is superintendent of the Dover Methodist Sunday school, which has for several years been the banner school of the district. He is a mason, a member of the Junior Order, and a steward in the Methodist Church.
For four years, Mr. Richardson has been a commissioner of Craven County, and superintendent of the county post. He is a member of the Democratic executive committee for Craven, and a member of the Democratic executive committee of the third congressional district. He has served as alderman and mayor pro tem of Dover. He is closely identified with the interests of the town, and is ready to endorse any measure that promises to be of benefit to his community and fellow citizens. He is a recognized leader and has the confidence of all. At Dover Mr. Richardson manages the correspondence for the Free Press, thereby making the paper of local value to the town.

Notes for WILLIAM CLOSS WEST:
Kinston Free Press - Industrial Issue 1906 - Sand Hill Township:
        W. C. WEST is one of progressive young men of Sand Hill township. He and his newly wedded wife are hospitality itself and they each place their shoulders to the wheel to make for themselves a prosperous home as it is a happy one. Mr. WEST was born on the W. H. WEST farm, which he now owns and where he resides. He is the son of WILLIAM
HENRY and SUDIE D. WEST, both deceased. He was born May 1, 1882. His mother was the daughter of JAMES H. FOY, of Richlands, Onslow county.
Mr. WEST'S father was a member of the board of county commissioners that ordered the county iron bridge to be built. He was a large land owner, owning several plantations. One thing CLOSS WEST takes pride in and that is that his mother was so active in abolishing the manufacture and sale of liquor in the township.
In his boyhood days CLOSS attended the neighborhood schools; but he was compelled to give too close attention to duties of the farm to obtain a very extended education. He is one of the leading members of the Bethany Methodist Episcopal Church. He has now under cultivation about 120 acres of land and owns and operates a cotton gin.
Recently Mr. WEST married Miss MATTIE, daughter of Mr. And Mrs. JOHN IVEY, of Seven Springs, Wayne county.

  1. MARGARET ANN4 WEST (KATHERINE3 JACKSON, JESSE2, JOHN1) was born August 09, 1830 in NC114. She married (1) JOSEPH A. PEARCE115 Abt. October 07, 1847 in Craven Co., NC115. She married (2) JOHN HAMILTON STEVENSON116 July 16, 1851 in Craven Co., NC116. He was born Abt. 1824 in NC117.

  1. BRYAN CLINTON4 WEST (KATHERINE3 JACKSON, JESSE2, JOHN1) was born September 15, 1832 in NC123,124, and died August 28, 1866125,126. He married SOPHIA C. WEST, daughter of JOHN WEST and NANCY KING. She was born January 01, 1833 in NC127,128,129, and died January 10, 1915130.

More About BRYAN CLINTON WEST:
Burial: Maplewood Cemetery, Kinston, NC

Notes for SOPHIA C. WEST:
Sophia is listed in the Lenoir County Death Record of her son Richard Bryant West as Sophia C. West (these records list mother by maiden name). She is mentioned in the obituary of Mary Ann West, who married Nicholas Hunter, as Mary Ann's half-sister (1910 Kinston Free Press). In the 1850 Federal Census for Lenoir County, NC, we find Sophia in the household of John C. West and wife Nancy. Nancy West (daughter of Thomas & Anna King, wife of John C. West) is buried in the King burying ground at Maplewood Cemetery, Kinston, NC. Sophia is listed as a neice in the will of Richard W. King, one time sheriff of Lenoir County, as is Mary Ann West Hunter. She is found with her children in the home of her uncle R. W. King in the 1870 Federal Census, after her husband Bryan was dead.
All of this seems to confirm her identity as the daughter of John C. West and Nancy King.

  2. CAPT. SPEIGHT BROCK4 WEST (KATHERINE3 JACKSON, JESSE2, JOHN1) was born November 15, 1834 in New Bern, Craven Co, NC145,146,147, and died June 03, 1908 in Richmond, Henrico Co, VA148. He married (1) HOLLON KILPATRICK December 20, 1855 in James Kilpatrick House, Kinston, NC149, daughter of JAMES KILPATRICK and LOVICA COX. She was born September 26, 1831 in Craven Co, NC?150, and died Bet. 1860 - 1867. He married (2) SARAH ANN BECTON151 April 02, 1867151, daughter of THOMAS BECTON and NANCEY WHITE. She was born January 31, 1851 in Craven Co, NC?151,152,153, and died 1931 in Richmond, VA?154,155.

Notes for CAPT. SPEIGHT BROCK WEST:
Speight Brock West was born November 29, 1835 to Kinnian and Catherine West of Craven County, North Carolina. He grew up farming with his father, until he married Hollon Kilpatrick of Kinston, Lenoir County, NC on December 20, 1855. He went to work as a merchant in Kinston, where he appears on the 1860 Federal Census with his wife Hollon and three-year old son Herbert Gerald.
On April 12, 1861, shots were fired on Fort Sumter, South Carolina, and the Civil War had begun. On May 16, 1861, at the age of 26, Speight enlisted in Company D of the 5th Regiment of North Carolina Troops, Confederate Army. He was appointed 1st Lieutenant, and served until he was transferred to Company E and promoted to Captain. Speight was wounded in the right arm and captured at Williamsburg, Virginia May 5, 1862. He was confined at Fort Monroe, Virginia, until exchanged on August 13, 1862. Speight led the 5th North Carolina into battle under General Iverson at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, July 1-3, 1863, and was wounded in the left shoulder. He rejoined Company E on September 13, 1863, and served until wounded at Spotsylvania Court House, Virginia, May 8-21, 1864. He rejoined the Company prior to October 19, 1864, when he was wounded in the head at Cedar Creek, Virginia, and retired to the Invalid Corps on March 27, 1865.
By the end of the war, Speight's wife Hollon had passed away, leaving him with his little boy Herbert. On April 2, 1867, Speight remarried, this time to Sarah Ann Becton of Craven County, North Carolina. By 1900, they had moved to Richmond, Virginia, where they ran a boarding house. Speight and Sarah had eleven children. Speight passed away on June 3, 1908, and was buried in Section E, Lot 127 of Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond, Virginia. His widow Sarah lived on until 1931, when she was laid to rest beside him.
Note that one of the Civil War records lists his name as Speight BrockHURST West, but with no confirmations of that, I believe that his middle name was simply Brock, like others in the family.

Notes for HERBERT GERALD WEST, SR.:
Herbert Gerald West and Nancy Maple Webb West were born in the area of Kinston, Lenoir County, NC. After marriage, they lived for a time in the home of her father, Rev. James Barney Webb. The couple first came to Waynesville, Haywood County, NC on April 21 of 1884, according to their daughter Jean. This was after the birth of daughter Jean Meyer West and son Herbert Gerald West, Jr., as confirmed by Jean Meyer West's Bible. Herbert and Nancy's younger children John Webb West and Sybil Margaret West were born in Waynesville. Sybil Margaret was taken by a diptheria epidemic before her eighth birthday.
Herbert is identified in the 1900 Federal Census for Haywood County, NC (ED#32) as a salesman in dry goods. The 1920 Census lists him as a bookkeeper. His grandson John Webb West, Jr. says that he was a bookkeeper at the "England, Walton, & Co." Tannery, where his daughter Jean and son John worked in the commisary. By 1930, Herbert, Jean, and John had gone into business for themselves with the HGWest Coal Company, later just West Coal Company.
The West family were all members of the First Methodist Church of Waynesville. Their house was on Water Street in Waynesville (later renamed Killian Street), bordered in front by the Murphy Branch of the Southern Railroad, and in the back by Richland Creek. Three generations are buried in the West plot at Green Hill Cemetery in Waynesville.

Notes for INA VISTULA WEST:
This unmarried aunt lost five years from her age between the 1900 Census (age 25, born Nov. 1874) and the 1910 Census (age 30). Evidently, she carried this new age to her death, as her marker in Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond, Virginia, lists her as born in 1879! The 1880 Census listed her as 4 years old, which would have put her birth in 1875, but it would seem that the more detailed 1900 Census is probably the correct one.
