GA. I found it a few months ago when I was at Mt. Zion Cemetery near Kingsland, GA.--was there to locate my Peeples/Norton graves, & did a videotape survey of the entire cemetery for future reference. There is an OXLEY family plot there with several old markers. The one for Elias G. OXLEY caught my eye, it said: "born near New Bern, NC" June 2, 1835, d. Oct. 26, 1896. A number of our relatives are from the same area, but earlier. Knowing family groups moved together, I was wondering if there could be any connection with the OXLEY's. Our Sutton's & Melton's went to TX, but both families were/are in GA--so maybe there could be a connection? I have all the Oxley info on video, & have transcribed part of it, will be glad to send you a copy. If you'd prefer, you can now find the same info on the GENWEB/GA site at http://www.gate.net/~tutcher/cemetery/o.html--just look under "O" of course:) It lists all surnames in Camden/Charlton Counties, GA. Wish I had known about this before I spent all that time driving all over!:) If you have a problem locating it, please let me know, will be glad to send you a printed copy. **** Posted on: Lenoir Co. They were the parents of Stephen (our ggfather b. 1839 in Lenoir and wounded in the Civil War - Co.A, 3rd Regt. North Carolina Infantry [later the 8d Regt]), Raleigh (b. abt. 1827), George B., Charles (killed at Malvern Hill 1862) and Eveline. There may have been an Olive somewhere in the line, but we are still searching that one. Our Stephen Oxley married Sarah Simmons (b. abt. 1839) and they had a daughter, Harriet Olivia Oxley (b. I have an ancestor by the name of Ruebin Oxley, ( I've seen his name spelled a couple of different ways, this being the most common), that I'm trying to locate. I have a military reenlistment of his dated 1817 from Louisiana that say he was born in Lenoir County N.C. It also has his age as 21 years old. So that would put him being born around 1796 or 1797. I have researched and researched but can't find anywhere in that area. I would be happy finding an Oxley with a child named Ruebin but i've had no luck. I found lots of Oxleys up your way and I'm sure they're kin to him somehow. I just need to find out how. Bertie, Lenoir, Pitt, and Dobbs had the highest number of Oxleys. Any help would be much appreciated. Even if you don't do the research yourself a finger in the right direction would be wonderful. Thanks, Scott Price! All of my descendants are from Lenoir Co. N.C. Your wonderful submissions to the Lenoir site have given me more information on them, than anyone could imagine. It seems my descendants, the Byrds', the Oxleys', Daughertys', Parrotts, had direct contact with the Mewborns'. Maybe you can help me with one missing part of my ancestral puzzle. I know that the families mentioned earlier, stayed together basically, and eventually settled in the Neutral Zone between Texas and Louisiana. Sabine parish was portioned off from Natchitoches parish in the 1840s. My GGG grandfather was Reuben Oxley. He was born in Lenoir Co about 1797, according to his army enlistment papers in 1817 in New Orleans, La. He was a professional soldier until 1833, retiring from Ft. Jesup near Many, La. We've traced all of his descendants from Reuben, but no one has ever found his parents in Lenoir. I believe his father is George Oxley, Jr., son of George Oxley. In all of your amassed information on Lenoir and it's inhabitants from 1760 through 1800, have you ever come across Reuben Oxley. I understand with all the submissions, you must be terribly busy; but if you could see in your heart to help me, I'd be so very grateful. Thank you !
