Phillips of Beaufort & Pitt Counties

Pitt County is the home of Dr. Howard Phillips and almost all the research for
this county is his. Howard has published a book on the Thomas Phillips family
of Pitt County, but at this date he has not been able to prove the father of
Thomas. Pitt was formed from Beaufort in l762.

A. Beaufort County Deed Books

e. to Michael Blount - Mar l796 - Book 9 p 55
f. to John Gaylord et al - Dec l802 - Book 2 & 3 p 538

NOTE: He was often referred to as John which has been very confusing MMM and
indeed the Archives has placed his estate records in the jacket of John
Phillips Sr. of Craven County although it should be Hyde County

7. Book 6 p 4l3 - Isaac Phillips sold a tract of land to John Rainer Dec
l791
8. Book l4 p 539 - a bill of sale from Thomas Phillips and wife Susanna to
Jeremiah G. Respress - Feb l822

D. Pitt Deed Book, Court Records etc
l. Book 0 p 39l - John and Rachel Phillips of Craven County bought l00 A in
Pitt on or near Mouth of greater Contentnea Creek in l757. They sold this land
l5 Dec l797 as they had moved to S.C. It was sold to Joel Patrick for 70 lbs -
wit was Walter Dunn and Rachel Phillips

Note: Howard has a copy of this Deed and thinks the John who sold the property
was the son of John and Rachel. The location of the property was where the
Thomas and Isabelle family was; however, we know John son of Thomas stayed in
Craven County and l757 was too early for a grandchild. Could this be one of the
earlier John's found in Craven County or just someone who moved in and out? I am
inclined to think the l757 date was incorrect and we can't find a deed for it
in Craven, Beaufort, or Dobbs. Also note that in the Craven Deeds, we find a
Rachel Phillips giving everything she possessed to her daughter Courtey in l797.
A unindexed deed could be in Craven in Books l-5 and I still haven't gone
through those Books yet.

NOTES ON ONE PITT FAILY - FROM HOWARD PHILLIPS

Although there are earlier Phillips records in Beaufort County, I will start
with William who left a Will in l769.

William Phillips md Ann Cookson (formerly md to Henry Cookson - file C. R.
024.298 Vol l p 42 N. C. Archives)

a. Isaac Phillips - sold land left by his father - Deed of sale from Isaac
Phillips to John Rainer - 2 June l785, Beaufort County.
b. John Phillips
c. Henry Phillips - moved to Pitt County - Henry Phillips, the son of
William and Ann Cookon Phillips, was in Pitt County as early as l785 as he witnessed
a deed that year. He purchased 80 a of land in l789 on Hurley Branch (Book M p
362). Hurley Branch is located between present day Falkland and Kings
Crossroads. Henry Phillips likely died before the l790 Census as there is no record of
him after that period. In the l790 Census, Mary Phillip was listed with one
male child under l0 years of age and likely was Henry's wife. The male child
probably was Isaac Phillips. Mary also appeared in the l800 Census. Tracing the
location of her neighbors as listed in the Censuses through land records,
places Mary on or near Henry Phillips' land. Since no other Phillips live in the
vicinity at that time, the evidence seems to support these conclusions.
Mary or Isaac did not appear in the l8l0 Census. It is likely Mary remarried
and Isaac was not yet 2l. Isaac likely reached his majority soon after the
l8l0 Census as he sold his father Henry Phillips' land the 9th of May l8l2. (Book
V p l6l) Isaac remained in the vicinity. He married Sarah Wallace, the
daughter of a neighbor (Book DD p 276). He also bought land from two of his
brother-in-laws, John and William Wallace (Book T, p l86)
Isaac died about l847. His wife petitioned for her dower rights in l850
(Book MM p 390) Only two children have been identified as the progeny of Isaac
and Sarah Wallace Phillips. Mary Phillips married John G. Tugwell and moved to
Brownsville, Heywood County, Tenn. Elizabeth Phillips married Alfred Moore.
They moved to the same area of Tennessee as the Tugwells.
l. Isaac Phillips - md Sarah Wallace
a. Mary Phillips - md John G. Tugwell - moved to Tenn
b. Elizabeth Phillips - d l845 in Tenn md Alfred Moore - bc l8l3 - d
l887 - buried Nutbrush, Tenn - information from Mrs. Jesse Coleman of Midland,
Texas says Isaac's name was Thomas Isaac
l. William B. Moore
2. Isaac Moore - b l837
3. Seth Martin Moore - b 3l Aug l838 - d 25 Dec l9l6 in Texas
4. John Alfred Moore - b l842
5. Sarah Moore - b l845 - died young
d. William Phillips - md a Caswright -
e. Elizabeth Phillips
f. Ann Phillips - md Jos Biggs - 20 Feb l787 - Some Colonial and
Revolutionary Families by Marilou B. Smallwood
g. Sarah Phillips

ASA PHILLIPS

Howard writes I am trying to establish his identity. He sold land in the
vicinty of my grandfather in l834. He was in the l820 and l830 Census of Pitt
County. An Asa Phillips was in Tyrrel County in l8l0. My theory is, after
selling land in Pitt County, he moved to Greene and died before the l840 Census.
Asa Phillips from Greene County was killed in the Civil War. This was likely a
son.

PETER PHILLIPS

I also found a Peter Phillip listed in the l830 Pitt County Census next to Asa.
This is the first time I have discovered this listing. It is not in the index
and is listed on two lines instead of the normal one line. How was he related
to Asa?
