From the research of Mary Jane Phillips
Matz, Lenore Phillips Smith and
Thomas - bc l700 - d l743 in Craven County, N.C. with a
Will - md
Isabelle who
may have been the daughter of John Lanthrope of Prince
George County, Va.
who
had a Will in l7l8. bc l705-l7l0 - d after l767 in
Craven County, N.C.
The first proven mention of our Thomas and Isabelle were
the birth
records of
some of their children located in Bristol Parish, Prince
George's County,
Va.
Mary Jane has been through all the other available records
in this county
and
has visited the area but most of Prince George's Records
were burned. She
thinks
they lived in the area of modern day Dinwiddie on 2nd
Swamp. It is not
known
at this time if a) they were born in this area b) they
moved to this area
after
their marriage c) Thomas moved to the area and married
Isabelle who
already
lived there. In any event they did appear to live here
during the early
part of
their marriage and several of the children were born here.
Since all the
children's births are not found on the Register, it can
only be assumed
the younger
children were born after the parents moved.
Although it has always been thought that Isabelle was a
Mason, it looks
like
she may have been the daughter of John Lanthrope/Lantrope
who also lived
on 2nd
Swamp. Mary Jane thinks the John Phillips with births of
children in
Bristol
Parish md another daughter of John Lanthrope.

NOTE:
This brings up an
interesting question as to whether the Daniel
Swellivant in the Dobbs Cross Index was Swellivant or
Sturdivant or
whether the Daniel
Sturdivant in PG County should have been Swellivant.
Remember the inter
marriage between James Phillips son of Thomas II and
Margaret Swellivant.
I wonder
if there was an intermariage between Margaret Lanthrope
daughter of John
and the
Sturdivants. Families tended to move together so it is
probable other
families
moved with Thomas Phillips to Craven County.

At this point, Thomas and Isabelle appear to have moved
from Bristol
Parish
although it is not known if they went directly to Craven
County as there
is almost
ten years missing for them. There are no Deeds in Craven
County Deed Books
starting with Book 6 for Thomas. I have read Craven Deed
Books 6-35 page
by page.
There is nothing in the Index for Books l-5 but these Books
have not been
done
page by page.
The next entry in any records we can find for Thomas, was
his Will in
Craven
County in l743. Below is an abstract by Lenore Phillips
Smith. I have a
copy of
the original, but it is almost impossible to read and I
can't tell who the
witnesses were.
