Effie Rouse Query

From Jim Isler - eagli1@hotmail.com

Was the Effie Rouse who married James Y. Joyner the daughter of Noah Rouse Jr. (1830-1897) and Mary Eliza Harper (1838-1897)? or Joshua Rouse and his second wife Annie Thigpin? or Edward Rouse and Lola Sutton? I have received response's saying she is the daughter of all three.

Effie E. Rouse, who was married to James Joyner, was my mother's great-aunt, sister to her grandfather, Thomas Richard Rouse. She was the daughter of Noah Rouse, Jr. and Mary Eliza Harper Rouse. Effie was born in 1867. My mother knew her. She was famous for her hospitality and her gardening. I'm fairly sure we have pictures of her.

I met Effie and James Joyner's son when I was a little girl on a visit to LaGrange. He was an old man then and I was an awkward little girl but he made me feel like a great lady. He had worked in China for a tobacco company many, many years ago.

Just checked my meager Duke notes. Joshua Rouse sold 163 acres of land to Noah Rouse (Sr.) for $728. Noah Rouse was born about 1792. Would this be the right time frame for your Joshua?

Also in my Duke notes...Rebekah Rouse gave to her daughter Winefred Rouse three negro girls--Poll, Luce, and Sucki (maybe sp--this one was hard to read) in 1809. Anybody know who Rebekah was married to?

On the subject of Wootens...Dr. James Yadkin Joyner, who was married to Effie Rouse (daughter of Noah and Mary Eliza Rouse), had a mother named Sallie A. Wooten (Joyner). Dr. Joyner's parents died when he was a baby and he was raised by his grandfather in Lenior County.

The information I have comes from a family bible and letters written by my ggrandmother, Sallie Elizabeth (Heath) Rouse, wife of George Kinsey Rouse, son of Marcellous Wooten Rouse, son of Joshua Rouse and Susan M Caswell. I know of two Effie's in our line, one the daughter of Joshua and the other the daughter of his grandson, Edward. Joshua's daughter was born in 1857 and I do not have a date for Edwards child. I am going through my NC material preparing for next weekends visit to New Bern and Kinston. I will try to find the documentation.

Joseph MIGHT be Noah's father. Noah's children were Richard Rouse (b.1828), Noah Rouse (2-26-1830 to 1-25-1897), Thomas William Rouse (1832 to 8-6-62 --died in the Civil War), and Bennett Rouse (d. 1898). There were also at least two daughters.
