For those of you who are new to the OLD DOBBERS Website.......Welcome!! We hope you will find this website helpful in your research. It is the researchers, who willingly share their hard work and information that have made this website such a sucess!!

There are many ways that you can become involved, joining one of the mailing lists, transcribing original documents, contributing to a Joint Surname Project, or sending your Common Surnames for posting are just a few.

Listed below are some of the projects here at OLD DOBBERS as well as a brief description of each, and how you can become involved.

Please Note:

If you are sending an email attachment of data to be uploaded, please make sure you send an additional email letting the recipient know the attachment has been sent, with so many virus's out there, this is the only way to be safe. Without prior notice of the attachment, it is likely that your information will be discarded.

Common Surnames Link up with others researching your surnames. This page lists:

  • Surname being researched
  • Name and email address of those researching those surnames
  • Links to personal web pages of researchers with information on individual surnames and/or specific information on surnames

You can use the form located on the Common Surnames Page to send your Surnames and Additonal information for posting.

Surname Projects

Tradition, myth, mystery, common first names, and even wishful thinking have plagued the history of several of the Old Dobbs Familys. The goal of this site is for researchers to pool their information, documentation, and theories to help prove the surname lines. BRIGHT was our first attempt, and although not finished, several researchers have helped straighten out some of the BRIGHT lines. The work continues.

Look at the Surnames currently being worked on. New surnames are added all the time, the only request is there be a coordinator (file manager) to whom all the information on that surname can be sent. Once compiled, the file manager forwards the information to the webmaster who posts the information on the Surname Projects Site. If you would like to add a surname project and/or be the file manager for a project please contact Guy Potts

Family History's

This site is for posting Family History's that are not part of a current Surname Project. (there may be one or two exceptions, like the Caswell's). Links to the Personal Web Pages, where researchers have posted Family History of Old Dobber surnames, are also found on this site.

There are a few ways to contribute to this section:

You can send a gedcom of your family that we can covert to webpages. Before sending the gedcom, make sure you remove information on any living individuals, as well as any notes etc, that you do not want included. Check your gedcom for possible errors or duplication, whatever is in the gedcom will show up on the webpages. You may include with this gedcom a brief description of what it contains, ie; what family names, and area's etc.

You can also send a Genealogy Report of your Family history, again, make sure that any living individuals have been removed and should be sent as either a word doc or an rtf attachment (preferred) to the same email address as above.

Misc Dobber Records

Primary source documents/information is usually posted in the North Carolina US GenWeb Archives of the appropriate county, (Dobbs, Greene, Lenoir, etc). Sometimes files are too large for the archives, the information involves several counties, or the information does not fit the categories of the archives, so it is placed on or linked from this site. Photo's, GIF and/or JPEG files are also found on this site. This type of information should be sent as either a word doc, rtf or pdf attachment.

Here are just some of the catagories listed on the Old Dobbers Miscellaneous:
  • Cemetery Collections
  • Maps
  • Church Records
  • Links
  • Newspapers
  • Photos
  • Wills
  • etc.
Instructions
If you have information to contribute that does not fit in to any of the above catagories, contact the Sloan Mason and let her know what it is. She can advise you on how to proceed. And as always, we thank you for your contributions.
